In mathematics, an absolute value is a function which measures the "size" of elements in a field or integral domain. More precisely, if D is an integral domain, then an absolute value is any mapping | x | from D to the real numbers R satisfying:
- | x | ≥ 0,
- | x | = 0 if and only if x = 0,
- | xy | = | x || y |,
- | x + y | ≤ | x | + | y |.
It follows from these axioms that | 1 | = 1 and | −1 | = 1. Furthermore, for every positive integer n,
| n | = | 1 + 1 + ...(n times) | = | −1 − 1 − ...(n times) | ≤ n.Note that some authors use the terms valuation, norm, or magnitude instead of "absolute value". However, the word " norm" usually refers to a specific kind of absolute value on a field (and which is also applied to other vector spaces).
The classical " absolute value" is one in which, for example, |2|=2. But many other functions fulfill the requirements stated above, for instance the square root of the classical absolute value (but not the square thereof).
Absolute Value is the second studio album by Boston rapper Akrobatik. It was released on February 19, 2008 by Fat Beats Records. The album features guest appearances by hip-hop luminaries such as Talib Kweli, Chuck D, and B-Real, as well as production by the likes of 9th Wonder, Illmind, J Dilla, and Da Beatminerz. Despite receiving rave reviews, the album has sold about 600 units in its opening week.
Absolute value may refer to:
-
Absolute value of a real number
- Absolute value (algebra), a generalization of the absolute value of a real number
- Absolute value theorem in mathematics, also known as the "squeeze theorem"
- Absolute Value (album), the second full-length album by rapper Akrobatik
- Absolute value (ethics), a philosophical absolute independent of individual and cultural views

Among the objects discovered at Troy--mere curiosities, some of them, however interesting and instructive--the so-called royal cup of Priam, in solid gold, two-handled and doublelipped, (the smaller lip designed for the host and his libation, the larger for the guest,) has, in the [211] very simplicity of its design, the grace of the economy with which it exactly fulfils its purpose, a positive beauty, an absolute value for the aesthetic sense, while strange and new enough, if it really settles at last a much-debated expression of Homer.
