What is "zupan"

Żupan (; , ) is a long garment, always lined, worn by almost all males of the noble social class in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, typical male attire from the beginning of the 16th to half of the 18th century, still surviving as a part of the Polish and Ukrainian national costume.

Zupan is an English rendering (spellings in other languages vary rather widely) of the following Slavic words:

• Župan, a title of various positions amongst South Slavic peoples, at the head of several types of units called Župa or duchy or principality
• Żupan, a Polish garment

Zupan is also a common surname in Slovenia. Notable individuals with that surname include:

• Mark Zupan, American wheelchair rugby player
• Jure Zupan, Slovene politician, Minister of Science and High Education (2004-2007)
• Miha Zupan, Slovene basketball player
• Vitomil Zupan, Slovene literate

Župan is a noble and administrative title used in several states in Central and Southeastern Europe between the 7th century and the 21st century. It was (and in Croatia still is) the leader of the administrative unit župa (or zhupa, županija). The term in turn was adopted by the Hungarians as ispán and spread further.
