Zaza is a play, originally written by French playwrights Pierre Berton and Charles Simon, but probably best known in the English-speaking world in the 1898 adaptation by David Belasco. The title character is a prostitute who becomes a music hall entertainer and the mistress of a married man. According to the IMDb, it was produced on stage and in film six times between 1913 and 1956. The IMDB's best-documented instance is the 1939 production starring Claudette Colbert as Zaza, Herbert Marshall as the man whose mistress she becomes, and Bert Lahr as her music-hall partner.

Zazà

Zazà is an opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo, with the libretto by the composer. Its première at the Teatro Lirico di Milano on 10 November 1900, starring Rosina Storchio as Zazà, Edoardo Garbin as Milio, Mario Sammarco as Cascart and Clorinda Pini-Corsi as Anaïde, and conducted by Arturo Toscanini, began its triumphant run of performances in opera houses around the world.

Over the following twenty years it received over fifty new productions from Palermo to Paris, Buenos Aires to Moscow, Cairo to San Francisco, arriving at The Metropolitan Opera on 16 January 1920 in a production directed by David Belasco and conducted by Roberto Moranzoni, starring Geraldine Farrar, Giulio Crimi and Pasquale Amato, and later Giovanni Martinelli and Giuseppe De Luca. La bohème and Zazà are the operas of Leoncavallo's which most nearly matched the success of Pagliacci.

The story of the opera concerns the French music hall singer, Zazà and her affair and subsequent decision to leave her lover, Milio, when she discovers that he is married. The score is rich with the colorful details of the French music halls where Leoncavallo had spent his early years as a composer.

Zaza is a 1939 American romantic drama film made by Paramount Pictures, and directed by George Cukor. The screenplay was written by Zoë Akins, based on play the Zaza. The music score is by Frederick Hollander. The film stars Claudette Colbert (who had replaced Isa Miranda) and Herbert Marshall.

The story was filmed by Paramount in a 1915 version with Pauline Frederick and previously remade in 1923 with Gloria Swanson.

This film is based on the 1899 French play of the same name produced on Broadway by David Belasco and starring Mrs. Leslie Carter. A print of the film is housed at the George Eastman House and the Library of Congress.

A previous film version was released by Paramount in 1915 starring Pauline Frederick. A third version, directed by George Cukor and starring Claudette Colbert, was released in 1939.

Zaza's original release date was scheduled for October 4, 1915. However, a nitrate fire at the Famous Players studio on September 11, 1915 caused the film's release to be delayed until November 11. The film is now considered lost.
