Zając (archaic feminine: Zającowa, plural Zającowie) is one of the most common surnames in Poland and the third most popular in Lesser Poland. The English translation of this surname is " hare". The second vowel of the name, generally rendered as "a" in English-speaking countries, is the nasalized ą of Polish, producing, in Polish, a sound somewhat more like a long ō in English. Without the nasalized ą (namely as " Zajac") the name also appears outside the Polish setting, sometimes with a variant spelling, especially in connection with other Slavic nationalities.

Usage examples of "zajac".
At the beginning I became friendly with a boy named Leonard Zajac, who was known to the wits in the poetry society as Young Man Carbuncular.
All I found was a piece of paper on which was written: Something tells me that I shall dream tonight of newspapers wrapped in fish Leonard Zajac had been four years with us, a man for all his waddling pity, and the mystery of his flight, perhaps in overwhelming dread, was met with nothing more than mild relief.
