Yabby

Yabby or Yabbie is a name given in Australia to two different kinds of crustacean:

  • Freshwater yabby, a crayfish of genus Cherax
  • Marine yabby, a ghost shrimp (infraorder Thalassinidea), which lives in the intertidal zone and tastes delicious

Usage examples of "yabby".

After giving the bucket of yabbies the once-over, she said with a definite lack of enthusiasm.

The banks of the pool were slimy grey mud, and the freshwater crayfish called yabbies lived in the mud.

Even the fish and the yabbies died, and so these young men determined to follow the river up to find the cause.

This she put into the water close to the big stones, and when it was bristling with clinging yabbies she drew them, clinging to the bait, right out and into the boat.

She saw that a race of red yabbies, big and strong, was brought into being, and she knew that the first had been reddened with her warm blood.

They gathered watercress and learned to tickle the mountain trout, and hunt for yabbies, the small freshwater crayfish abundant in the mountain streams, so that they would often bring home a bountiful supply.
