Vernon

Vernon may refer to:

Vernon (surname)

Vernon is a surname, from a masculine name that is derived from the Gaul word vern for Alder tree (also springlike, flourishing, or full of life) and a Gaulish- latin suffix indicating a location. Thus Vernon is a "place of alders". Variants include Vern, Vernard, Verne, Verna, Sberna, Sberno. Vernon was introduced into England as an aristocratic surname at the time of the Norman conquest. It was adapted into Spanish as "VernĂ³n".

Vernon (Mount Olive, North Carolina)

Vernon, also known as the Anna Maria Ward House, was a historic plantation house located near Mount Olive, Wayne County, North Carolina. It was built about 1837, and was a two-story, five bay by two bay, Federal style frame dwelling. It sat on a brick pier foundation and one-story shed porch that replaced a mid-19th century two-story porch of Italianate design. It has been demolished.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Usage examples of "vernon".

Thoreau is considered the American Anarchist par excellence, and, if we can believe Vernon Louis Parrington, all of the Adams family--from the two presidents to the brothers--wished nothing more than the burning of State Street, the site of Boston banking.

London for a few days, and during my absence Vernon came down, bringing the dog with him.

He walked fast up the road, not perspicuously conscious that his motive was to be well in advance of Vernon Whitford: to whom, after all, the knowledge imparted by Crossjay would be of small advantage.

But it will be sad for me to see Chori and Pingo die, and Vernon die, and to see the Curandera die, who is so pretty with many fine years of lovemaking ahead of her.

Tom and Vernon laid Pingo down, and Tom bent over him, desperately feeling for a pulse.

At first glance there was nothing unusual about Vernon Quayle, nothing to cause unease.

This should have been a happy and exciting moment, but everybody seemed ill at ease, except for Vernon Quayle himself.

I felt suddenly that I must get away if only for a few minutes, for I could scarcely bear to see Vernon Quayle and Eleanor together.

In his place Vernon Quayle engaged a sour, burly man from Southampton.

Vernon Quayle was not in the house he was out walking or riding alone.

I shivered, wondering what instinct made her regard Vernon Quayle in such a light.

Vernon Quayle is like Rild, that High Lama I told you about, except that Rild was a good man and I think Vernon Quayle is bad.

Vernon Quayle astonished me by appearing in the drawing-room after dinner.

Eleanor was in her room, resting before lunch, something she had never dreamt of in the time before Vernon Quayle, when her energy had been boundless.

And then it came to me, even as I remembered the way Vernon Quayle had smiled when he first saw the Round Room.
