Reia (programming language)

Reia was a general-purpose concurrent object-oriented programming language for the Erlang virtual machine. As of August 10, 2011, Reia has been declared defunct in favor of Elixir.

Reia supported multiple programming paradigms including imperative, functional, declarative, object oriented, and concurrent. It used the actor model for concurrency in a manner that worked alongside its object system. It used pattern matching as the primary operation by which it selected branches to take and bind variables. It also had a dynamic type system and automatic memory management; it was therefore similar in varying respects to Erlang, Ruby, and Python.

Syrt

A syrt is a kind of an elevated landform in Russia and Central Asia.

The word means " highland", " ridge" or " backbone" in Turkic languages (sırt) and is present in Turkic toponymy in the mentioned areas: in Tien Shan, Pamirs, South Urals, such as Obshchiy Syrt by Urals, Uzun-Syrt ("Long back") plateau by Koktebel in Crimea.

It is a denudational upland or elevated flatland, a kind of dissected plateau. Syrts may be separated from each other by higher ridges. At the same time, syrts may serve as water divides between drainage basins for larger rivers.

The term should not to be confused with the Latin term syrtis and the derived term "syrt" for sandy shores or quicksand.

Metacommunity

An ecological metacommunity is a set of interacting communities which are linked by the dispersal of multiple, potentially interacting species. The term is derived from the field of community ecology, which is primarily concerned with patterns of species distribution, abundance and interactions.

There are four theoretical frameworks, or unifying themes, that each detail specific mechanistic processes useful for predicting empirical community patterns. These are the patch dynamics, species sorting, source–sink dynamics (or mass effect) and neutral model frameworks. Patch dynamics models describe species composition among multiple, identical patches, such as islands, and emphasizes colonization-competitive ability trade-offs. Species sorting models describe variation in abundance and composition within the metacommunity due to individual species responses to environmental heterogeneity, such that certain local conditions may favor certain species and not others. This model represents the classical theories of the niche-centric era of G. Evelyn Hutchinson and Robert MacArthur. Source-sink models describe a framework in which dispersal and environmental heterogeneity interact to determine local and regional abundance and composition. This framework is derived from the metapopulation ecology term describing source-sink dynamics at the population level. Finally, the neutral perspective describes a framework where species are essentially equivalent in their competitive and dispersal abilities, and local and regional composition and abundance is determined primarily by stochastic demographic processes and dispersal limitation. The neutral perspective was recently popularized by Stephen Hubbell following his groundbreaking work on the unified neutral theory of biodiversity.

Vispring

Vispring, formerly known as Vi-Spring, is a bed company founded in 1901 in Plymouth, in the South West of England, marketing beds made of natural materials. Part of Vispring's notability comes from being the first English bed makers to use the Marshall patent pocketed spring coil now commonly referred to as the Marshall coil. By 1914 Marshall Mattress of England were found in luxurious hotels, clubs and ocean liners, including The Queen Mary & The Titanic.

Vispring was founded by two Marshall Mattress agents of James Marshall who granted them patent rights to produce Marshall mattresses in England. They continued to use the Marshall name until the early 1930s at which point they rebranded as Vispring.

Vispring beds are handmade using natural materials such as wool, cotton, horsehair, coir, silk, cashmere, mohair and alpaca fleece rather than synthetic materials and foam. The “VI” in Vispring stands for the Roman numeral 6. This represents the six turns to each coil which has been their trademark. The coils are made with Vanadium Steel Wire, which acts to improve spring resilience properties and creates more consistent springing that may be less likely to suffer height loss with use.

Vánočka

Vánočka is a braided bread, baked in Czech Republic and Slovakia (in Slovak called vianočka) traditionally at Christmas time. It is rich in eggs and butter, making it similar to brioche. Lemon rind and rum add color and flavor; the dough can also contain raisins and almonds, and is braided like challah. A vánočka may be built from three progressively smaller braids, stacked on top of each other; this is sometimes interpreted as a rough sculpture of the baby Jesus wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.

It has a reputation for being difficult to prepare, so in many households, superstitions and special customs are attached to the baking process. When making vánočka, it is said that one must think of everyone dear to you. Another custom is to avoid touching silver or metal to the vánočka. Finally, the person who is making the vánočka should jump up and down while the dough rises.

The bread is named after Vánoce meaning Christmas in Czech (Vianoce in Slovak).

Out of identical dough, a loaf called mazanec is made on Easter.

It was too cold to sleep above, so Alec retreated to the companionway, his back to the cabin door.

Caralie smiled and stretched languidly, her sensual movement reawakening a burst of desire inside him.

As air seeped back into his lungs, he became aware of Caralie and Paula both staring at him-- Paula in confusion and Caralie in weary sadness.

It wasn't until Winifred Bakerston and Sir Henry had left that Riley could refocus his attention on Car alie Tracey.

Riley was aware of the possessiveness of those words and for the first time he realized that Caralie's existence might change the neat and orderly world he'd built around his daughter.

Kaycee, an uncommonly pretty child, had never met a stranger she didn't like, and Caralie was no exception.

But as he saw the child and Caralie together, he realized all those people had been wrong.

Riley frowned, noting the way Caralie held Kaycee awkwardly, away from her body as if afraid the child might drool or spit up on her.

It took Riley only a moment to lock up the studio, then Caralie followed him up the flight of stairs that led to his second-story apartment.

In the kitchen, he placed Kaycee in her high chair and motioned Caralie into a chair at the table.

He looked over at Caralie, who appeared utterly unmoved by the cute little girl.

As Kaycee began decimating her lunch, Riley sank into the chair opposite Caralie, unsure exactly what to say to her.

Caralie laced her fingers together on the tabletop, her gaze downcast.

Caralie frowned, as if she found the idea distasteful, and again, dislike for her winged through Riley.

She leaned toward Kaycee, offering a cheek to the little girl, who smacked it happily, then held out a piece of hot dog to Caralie.
