Undertow (Tool album)

Undertow is the first full-length and second major-label studio album release by American progressive metal band Tool, released in 1993. According to Allmusic, Undertow helped heavy metal music and progressive rock remain prominent as a mainstream musical style, and allowed several later bands to break through to the mainstream. It was released at a time when grunge was at the height of its popularity, and pop punk was slowly beginning to gather mainstream attention. AllMusic saw the album's success in the "striking, haunting visuals that complemented the album's nihilistic yet wistful mood." , Undertow has sold 2,910,000 copies in the US and been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.

The album was recorded between October and December 1992 at Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, and at Grandmaster Recorders, Hollywood, California, by Sylvia Massy. Some of the songs featured on the album are songs that the band decided to not release on their first EP, Opiate.

Undertow (water waves)

Undertow in water waves is a current that is physically experienced as the off-shore pull that a person feels when they are standing in the water within the breaking-wave zone near a beach. People feel this current most strongly near their feet, as each breaking wave advances towards them.

In physical oceanography, undertow is defined as an under-current which is moving offshore when waves are approaching a shore. Undertow is a necessary and universal feature; it is a return flow which compensates for the onshore-directed flow in the zone above the wave troughs. The undertow's flow velocities are generally strongest in the surf zone, where the water is shallow and the waves are high (due to shoaling).

In popular usage, the word "undertow" is often misapplied to rip currents. An undertow occurs everywhere undeneath shore-approaching waves, whereas in contrast, rip currents are localized narrow offshore currents occurring at certain locations along the coast. Unlike undertow, rip currents are strong at the surface.

Undertow (song)

"Undertow" is a song by the American indie rock band Warpaint. It is the third track and lead single from the band's debut studio album The Fool, and was released on September 21, 2010 on Rough Trade Records. Described by the band as an homage to the Nirvana song " Polly", "Undertow" received favorable acclaim and placed in the United Kingdom's Independent Singles and Independent Breakers charts upon its release. A limited edition double A-side single was released as part of Record Store Day 2012.

Describing the origins of the song, bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg said "Undertow" developed from a bassline she and guitarist Theresa Wayman were working on. According to Lindberg, "[Wayman] just started singing the lyrics to 'Polly' over that song … instead of making that a cover … we said, 'well, write your own words to the song'." Lindberg added that if "you listen to the songs back-to-back they sound nothing alike" but referred to "Undertow" as "a bit of an homage to [[Kurt Cobain|Kurt [Cobain] ]] and Nirvana." A music video for "Undertow" was directed by Lindberg's sister and former Warpaint drummer Shannyn Sossamon.
