Tyagi is a surname with its origins in North India and Pakistan.The name is prevalent in both Hindu and Muslim communities, who share a common ancestor. Taga and Tagha are alternative names that are sometimes used for the community. Surnames common to the community include Tyagi and Chaudhry. Tyagi also meaning "sacrificing (oneself)" has led some Tyagis to claim Brahmin ancestors who rejected priestly occupations and were traditionally either landowning agriculturists or soldiers.
Community members who converted to Islam are known as Muslim Tyagis and as Mulla Brahmin, Musalman Taga, Mahesra and Moolay Taga.
Tyagi is a 1992 Hindi-language Indian feature film produced directed by K. C. Bokadia, starring Rajinikanth, Jayaprada, Prem Chopra, Gulshan Grover and Shakti Kapoor. Jayaprada plays the lead role as the love interest of Rajinikanth. The film is a remake of the 1991 Tamil film Dharma Dorai starring Rajinikanth and Gautami Tadimalla which was later remade into Kannada as Deva.
Bhagyashree of Maine Pyar Kiya fame, also plays an important role with her real life husband Himalaya Dasani as her screen pair.
