Twin Bridges
Wikipedia
Twin bridges are a set of two bridges running parallel to each other. A pair of twin bridges is often referred to collectively as a twin-span or dual-span bridge. Bridges of this type are often created by building a new bridge parallel to an existing one in order to increase the traffic capacity of the crossing. While most twin-span bridges consist of two identical bridges, this is not always the case. The two bridges that form the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, for example, have several differences, most notably in the number of lanes each carries. The longest twin-span bridge is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana.
For a bridge owner, twin bridges can improve the maintenance and management of the structures. For motorists, twin bridges can limit the risk that both directions of traffic will be disrupted by an accident.
The Twin Bridges are a pair of steel-plate girder bridges that span the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They carry northbound and southbound traffic on US 1 ( Roosevelt Expressway) just north of its intersection with Interstate 76.
The northbound bridge has 11 spans and is 1,921 feet long, while the southbound bridge has 12 spans and is 1,990 feet long. The bridges were built in 1960 and partially rebuilt (redecked) in 1985 and again in 2010. Each bridge carries three lanes of traffic.
The bridges span the Schuylkill River, Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, Kelly Drive, Ridge Avenue, ramps to and from Ridge Avenue, and railroad tracks, including the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, Schuylkill River Viaduct.
The bridges' design was awarded a Certificate of Award Class II (Honorable Mention) by the American Institute of Steel Construction, who designated it one of "America's Most Beautiful Bridges".
Twin Bridges are two historic bridges located at Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana. The Hendricks County Bridge #178 is a Baltimore through Truss bridge built in 1887. The wrought iron bridge measures 149 feet, 6 inches, long and spans White Lick Creek. The Big Four Railroad Bridge was built by the Big Four Railroad and built in 1906. It is a three-span concrete structure and spans White Lick Creek and County Road 150 East. Associated with the bridges is a cut stone railroad abutment built about 1870.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
