TransApps

TransApps (Transformative Applications) is a United States Department of Defense’s “Mobile Apps for the Military” program funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA). TransApps provides Soldiers with a number of secure mobile applications that function within a broad range of austere environments. The program began in 2010, and within 18 months supported 3,000 users in Afghanistan. The TransApps program managed rapid development within a tactical environment and tackled many diverse problem sets in the realms of security, combat tested mobile applications, third party app testing and integration, and disconnected mobile imagery. The program developed and employed testing at the application level, as well as a marketplace for mobile apps. Unlike many other DoD development projects, the program sought to pursue a start-up business mentality, including a collaborative research environment across the team with multiple contractors and Government personnel colocated in an incubator-like environment. Currently, there are more than 50 applications available for use within a secure operational environment, such as a range of geospatial, cultural, and analytic capabilities.
