n. (context image processing English) A process of creating a black-and-white image out of a grayscale image consisting of setting exactly those pixels to white whose value is above a given threshold, setting the other pixels to black.

Thresholding is the simplest method of image segmentation. From a grayscale image, thresholding can be used to create binary images (Shapiro, et al. 2001:83).
