Theodoropolis

Theodoropolis is the name of a number of Ancient cities ('-polis' being Greek for city), including (former) bishoprics, named after a Saint or Roman Emperor Theodoros ( Theodore) or Theodora, notably :

  • Theodoropolis in Arcadia, in Egypt, also a former bishopric
  • Theodoropolis in Europa, in Europa province (now European Turkey), also a former bishopric, with two Catholic titular successor sees :
    • Theodoropolis of the Romans (Latin)
    • formerly Theodoropolis of the Greeks (Greek Catholic, Byzantine Rite), was renamed Theodorium before its suppression
  • Euchaneia, a town near or identical with Euchaita (an Archbishopric in Pontus province, in Asia Minor), center of the veneration of Saint Theodore of Amasea
  • the former Dorostolon, renamed after Byzantine empress Theodora, wife of John I Tzimisces, where his troops had successfully sieged Svyatoslav I of Kievan Rus's troops in the fortress in 971
  • the former Silistra in Thrace, renamed after military saint Theodore Stratelates, who allegedly helped in the above campaign
