Thanatos

In Greek mythology, Thanatos ( [] " Death", from θνῄσκω thnēskō "to die, be dying") was the personification of death. He was a minor figure in Greek mythology, often referred to, but rarely appearing in person.

His name is transliterated in Latin as Thanatus, but his equivalent in Roman mythology is Mors or Letum/Letus, and he is sometimes identified erroneously with Orcus (Orcus himself had a Greek equivalent in the form of Horkos, God of the Oath).

Thanatos (band)

Thanatos is a Dutch Death metal/ Thrash metal band. With a history dating back to 1984, they are the oldest death metal band from the Netherlands. Their second album, Realm of Ecstasy (some album covers show Realm of ), had received positive marks from Dutch music magazine Oor for its solid compositions and challenging arrangements. After enduring constantly changing line-ups and problems with distribution, promotion, and even ownership of the rights to the second album, Thanatos folded in 1992, the final straw being the cancellation of a tour with Cannibal Corpse and Exhorder.

In 1999, founding member Stephan Gebédi revived the band, which signs with Hammerheart Records. First came two albums with demo and live tracks, then the band's first full album, Angelic Encounters, in 2000. An EP with original songs as well as covers from Celtic Frost and Possessed is released by Baphomet. After a few shows in Greece and a short tour with Pungent Stench, the band record their fourth album, Undead. Unholy. Divine, described as a solid return to 1980s metal (in the style of Slayer, Possessed) with the addition of blast beats. Release of a fifth album, Justified Genocide, was postponed when the band's label at the time, Black Lotus Records, went bankrupt; Dan Swano reportedly will finish the mix for the CD. To celebrate more than twenty years of Dutch death metal, Thanatos releases (on Chinese label AreaDeath Productions) a limited-edition box containing Emerging From The Netherworlds, Realm Of Ecstasy, and Angelic Encounters, besides 56 bonus tracks and 19 videos.

In February 2009, the band issued an update containing details about their upcoming album Justified Genocide. It was released on March 15 in Europe and April 6 in the UK and Ireland.

Century Media Records signed the band in 2012. The initial plan was to re-release the 5 studio albums of the band in 2012 and 2013. But recently Century Media offered the band a new recording contract so we can expect a new studio album from Thanatos in 2014. This will coincide with the band's 30th anniversary in that year.

Rosenthal ran the fanzine Alternative Rhythms in South Florida and Ogle wrote for the magazine as a concert and record reviewer. The two had been friends since middle school. During this time piece of Ogle can be heard on various black tape for a blue girl LPs. The title track of the LP "this lush garden within" began life as a Thanatos song. The group became a live act in 1995 after the release of their second LP with the addition of Tucker and Polcyn.

Although, as I will argue in the text, the central negative motivation of the Ego camps was Phobos, or the fear of the lower, in this particular objectifying stance their own Thanatos was at work.

From world-centric pluralism to divine egoism and biocentric sensory immersionat one with sentimental nature in my own self-reverberating feelingsthis was the other endgame of flatland holism, a morbid embrace driven by a Thanatos that, in the way of all deception, whispered always of the wonders of ever-shallower engagements.

Even though Freud doesn't see the Great Circle of Ascent and Descent, he of course makes use of what small segment of it he does understand: in psychoanalytic therapy, one engages in "regression in service of ego"that is, one descends back into a lower level that was alienated and split off by fear and anxiety (by Phobos), reintegrates that level by embracing it with love and acceptance (Agape), and thus releases that lower level from being a regressive pull, releases it from being in the grips of Thanatos, and allows it to rejoin the ongoing march of a higher identity and a wider love of others (Eros).
