Terephthalic acid (a portmanteau of the turpentine producing tree terebinthus, and phthalic acid) is the organic compound with formula CH(COH). This white solid is a commodity chemical, used principally as a precursor to the polyester PET, used to make clothing and plastic bottles. Several million tonnes are produced annually.
This page provides supplementary chemical data on Terephthalic acid, the organic compound and one of three isomeric phthalic acids, all with formula CH(COH).
Usage examples of "terephthalic acid".
What we have done is to synthesize a lightweight but very strong polymer from alternating monomers of para-phenylenediamine and terephthalic acid.
