Telmatobiinae

The Telmatobiinae, water frogs, are a subfamily of frogs endemic to South America. Since 2011, it has usually been considered to be a family, Telmatobiidae.

Telmatobiinae was originally a large subfamily of leptodactylid frogs. The subfamily has since undergone extensive revision, and most genera have been placed elsewhere. Their removal from the large and confusing Leptodactylidae family is based on genetic distinction. Only one genus, Telmatobius Wiegmann, 1834, is left, making Telmatobiinae/Telmatobiidae monogeneric. Some sources, however, treat Batrachophrynus as a genus separate from Telmatobius.
