Tarahara

Tarahara तरहरा is the part of Ithari sub-metropolitian city Sunsari District of Nepal. It is located on the Koshi Highway in between Itahari and Dharan.

It is famous in the eastern region primarily for Sekuwa (roasted meat).

There is a government-owned agricultural research center.

The name Tarahara comes from Sanskrit Terai + Hara(Green) = Tarahara.

Tarahara is built on Koshi Highway between Itahari and Dharan. It shares it eastern border with Itahari Municipality and north with Charkose Jhadi (Jungle). While south and west is part of the same VDC. Tarahara lies on the Eastern Terai plains of Nepal. Population of the town is about 35,000 - 40,000 and rising. The town is built on the western side of the Koshi Highway. During the civil war the town did not attract much conflict and was not the battle ground for the government force and the Maoist rebels. It was peaceful in comparison to other towns and villages of Nepal. Which made a choice for many Nepalese from northern parts of the country to migrate to Tarahara and as a result the population of the town grew rapidly during the civil war. Tarahara is mainly a farming country. Although it is agriculture country but education is booming with many young generation attending education system in English. Four English medium school from K-10, one Nepali medium school from 1-12 and many other primary schools in and around Tarahara. The major economy of the town is agriculture and farming. But real estate (Jagga DaLal) is rising rapidly and taking its place as major economy of the region. Besides, Sekuwa is also a major economy booster of the town. Some of the popular means of transport of the town are bicycle, rickshaw and motorcycle and at present scooter is in the rise among many Tarahara-Siders and especially amongst the females. Bazaar (local market) days are Monday and Thursday. Roads are unofficially closed for cars and large vehicles as the roads are crowded on a market day. Shopping is cheaper in Tarahara in comparison to Itahari and Dharan. Few banks have opened their branch offices; market, modern retail stores and shopping centres are increasing. Building concrete roads around Tarahara are on the rise. Charkose Jhadi (Jungle) north of the town around Panipiya is a place for many wild and some rare birds of Nepal. Panipiya could also be transformed into a very suitable and possibly the largest natural golf course in Nepal with natural creek running through the forest and on either side of the road through Panipiya and Jaributti.
