What is "tanya"

The Tanya, written by Shneur Zalman of Liadi, is the main work of the Chabad philosophy and the Chabad approach to Hasidic mysticism, as it defines its general interpretation and method. The subsequent extensive library of the Chabad school, authored by successive leaders, builds upon the approach of the Tanya. Chabad differed from "Mainstream Hasidism" in its search for philosophical investigation and intellectual analysis of Hasidic Torah exegesis. This emphasised the mind as the route to internalising Hasidic mystical dveikus (emotional fervour), in contrast to general Hasidism's creative enthusiasm in faith. As a consequence, Chabad Hasidic writings are typically characterised by their systematic intellectual structure, while other classic texts of general Hasidic mysticism are usually more compiled or anecdotal in nature.

As one of the founding figures of Hasidic mysticism, Schneur Zalman and his approach in the Tanya are venerated by other Hasidic schools, although they tend to avoid its meditative methods. In Chabad, it is called "the Written Torah of Hasidus", with the many subsequent Chabad writings being relatively " Oral Torah" explanation. In it, Schneur Zalman brings the new interpretations of Jewish mysticism by the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Hasidism, into philosophical articulation and definition. This intellectual form synthesises Hasidic Divine Omnipresence and Jewish soulfulness with other historical components of Rabbinic literature, embodied in the Talmud, Medieval philosophy, Musar (ethical) literature and Lurianic Kabbalah. The Tanya has therefore been seen in Chabad as the defining Hasidic text, and a subsequent stage of Jewish mystical evolution.

Tanya is a low-budget 1976 comedy film directed by Nate Rodgers and loosely based on the experiences of Patricia Hearst. The lead character, Charlotte Kane, is 20-year-old heiress of a newspaper mogul. She is kidnapped by five sex-crazed pseudo-relovutionaries who call themselves "The Symphonic Liberation Army" (a parody of the Symbionese Liberation Army). Charlotte is quickly converted to their cause and changes her name to Tanya.

Tanya is an album released in 2002 by Tanya Tucker on her own Tuckertime label and Capitol Records.

The highest charting Billboard Country Single was the #34 "A Memory Like I'm Gonna Be." Other noteworthy songs include "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)," (a minor Billboard #49 Country Single) and "I Can Live Without You (But Not Very Long)" and "I Can Do That." The album peaked at #39 on the Country Albums chart.

Two of this album's tracks — "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)" and "Over My Shoulder" — were originally recorded by Patty Loveless on her 1994 album When Fallen Angels Fly. The former song was recorded by Delbert McClinton and Greg Holland as well.

Giving it three stars out of five, Jonathan Widran of Allmusic said in his review, "Tucker seems, as always, adept at just about any great story and steel guitar-twanged groove that comes her way."

Tanya is the Slavic hypocoristic of Tatiana. It is now quite commonly used as an independent given name in the English-speaking world.

Its popularity grew in many respects thanks to Alexander Pushkin's poem Eugene Onegin whose main character was Tatiana Larina, beloved by Onegin.

Tanya (1902–1929) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse bred and raised in Kentucky. She was bred by William Collins Whitney and foaled at his Brookdale Farm in Lincroft, New Jersey. Sired by the outstanding English stallion Meddler, she was out of the mare Handspun.

Before Tanya could set foot on a track, William Whitney died. She, along with several other racers for the Whitney stable, was leased to Herman Duryea. As a 2-year-old, she won the Hopeful Stakes, the National Stallion Stakes, and the Spinaway Stakes under his colors.
