Tamasha is a traditional form of Marathi theatre, often with singing and dancing, widely performed by local or travelling theatre groups within the state of Maharashtra, India. It has also been the subject of several Marathi films. Some Hindi movies have also included Tamasha-themed songs, known as Lavanis, in the past.
Traditional Tamasha is influenced by many Indian art forms and draws from such diverse traditions as kaveli, ghazals, Kathak dance, dashavatara, lalit and kirtan. There are two types of Tamasha: dholki bhaari and the older form, sangeet baari which contains more dance and music than drama. In Maharashtra, the Kolhati groups are traditionally associated with the performance of Tamasha.
Tamasha (English: A spectacle) is a 2015 Indian romantic drama film written and directed by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under his banner, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. It features Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The film score and soundtrack album was composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics from Irshad Kamil.
Filmed briefly in Corsica, Indian cities– Shimla, Delhi, Gurgaon, Kolkata; followed by two-day schedule in Tokyo, the film tells the story of character Ved Vardhan Sahni (played by Kapoor) in three stages–as a nine-year-old child, a 19-year-old adolescent and a 30-year-old adult in a drama-based non-linear screenplay.
The film was released on 27 November 2015 to mixed reviews by film critics. However, they praised the performances of lead actors but criticised the unsatisfactory togetherness of the plot. The film received nominations for direction, music and performances of the lead actors, notably Kapoor being nominated under Filmfare Award for Best Actor category and Irshad Kamil winning the Filmfare Award for Best Lyrics for his lyrical work to the soundtrack album of the film.
Tamasha is the soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman with song lyrics by Irshad Kamil, to the 2015 Hindi film of the same name, directed by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The album features nine tracks, and was released on October 16, 2015 by T-Series. The music in the film is narrative, in the form of impresarios, depicting emotions of the characters. The songs cover genres like European dance, bhangra, opera, Hindustani classical and dubstep apart from experimental fusion of genres.
Upon release, music critics not only praised the trio–director, composer and lyricist for coming up with classy, catchy and commercial numbers but also censured the soundtrack album, calling the treatment to the album as irreverent and hangover of previous works Highway and Rockstar. The track "Matargashti" was released as the first single prior to the soundtrack album release. The tracks "Matargashti" and "Tum Saath Ho" were the chart toppers on the Indian Music Charts.
The soundtrack was adjudged as one of the best albums of 2015, wherein A. R. Rahman and Alka Yagnik were nominated under Filmfare Award for Best Music Director and Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, respectively. However, lyricist Irshad Kamil won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist.
