What is "special rapporteur"

n. An individual who works on behalf of a regional or international organization and is charged with investigating, monitoring and recommending solutions to specific human rights problems.

Special Rapporteur is a title given to individuals working on behalf of various regional and international organizations who bear specific mandates to investigate, monitor and recommend solutions to specific human rights problems.

There currently exist:

• Special Rapporteurs of the United Nations
• Special Rapporteurs of the African Union
• Special Rapporteurs of the Organization of American States
