Speaking in Tongues (Talking Heads album)

Speaking in Tongues is the fifth studio album by the band Talking Heads, released in 1983. The album was a commercial breakthrough that produced the band's first (and only) American Top 10 hit, " Burning Down the House", which was accompanied by a promotional video.

The album's tour was documented in Jonathan Demme's film Stop Making Sense, which generated a live album of the same name. (The concert film and live album's title comes from the repeated phrase "Stop making sense!" during the song "Girlfriend Is Better".) In addition, the album crossed over to the dance charts where it peaked at number two for six weeks. It is also the group's highest-charting album on the American Billboard 200.

"Speaking in Tongues" is the fifth single from indie rock band Arcade Fire's third album, The Suburbs. It did not appear on the original track listing, but showed up on the deluxe edition as a bonus track.

There is a direct reference to T.S Eliot's The Waste Land: "Hypocrite reader, my double, my brother", himself quoting Baudelaire's To the Reader: "— Hypocrite lecteur, — mon semblable, — mon frère!"

The title itself is a reference to the Bible (Acts 2:4 ; 1 Corinthians 14:18) to a phenomenon called glossolalia, which is believed to be a divine language unknown to the speaker. It is also a reference to the 1983 album of the same name by Talking Heads, the former band of guest singer David Byrne.

Speaking in Tongues: A Letter to 3rd World Women Writers is a speech written by Gloria E. Anzaldúa. The speech was drafted in 1979 and was published in Anzaldúa’s feminist anthology This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color (1981). Writing this essay in the format of a letter, Anzaldua urges the reader to “write from the body” and she connects her body to other bodies, creating a community of embodied people. This essay is addressed to women of color as she shows sympathy, encouragement, and words of wisdom towards them. The essay tells the reader that in order to understand the text, the reader must reveal himself in the text. The reader must also allow the text to enter himself if the reader chooses to enter the text.
