Wikipedia
Soutache

A soutache is narrow flat decorative braid, a type of galloon, used in the trimming of drapery or clothing. In clothing soutache is used to conceal a seam. Often woven of metallic bullion thread, silk, or a blend of silk and wool, soutache began to be made of rayon and other synthetic fibers in the 20th century.

In military uniforms a particular width or color of soutache is used to indicate rank, particularly in a hat. In athletic uniforms a contrasting soutache is used to outline numbers or players' names.

The term is also used in bookbinding, where a narrow soutache is applied at the top and bottom of a book back to reinforce the spine and provide a barrier to keep dust out of the binding.

Usage examples of "soutache".

Elizabeth had already divested herself of hat, coat, and jacket, and Marina found herself eyeing the fashionable emerald trumpet skirt with its trimming of black soutache braid and the cream silk shirtwaist with its softening fall of Venice lace with a pang of envy.

The apprehension was replaced by relief, as Marina watched the woman mentally removing soutache and lace, pin tucks and ribbon.

The final passenger boarded immediately behind the other woman and was a young woman, perhaps eighteen or nineteen, wearing a stylish traveling suit in a cranberry-colored wool trimmed with military-styled soutache with an ecru silk, high necked blouse peeking out from the neckline of the suit jacket.

She had indeed looked quite unlike herself with her thick brown hair piled in glossy curls, a few dangling here and there, her smart hat and blue velvet cape to match with its black soutache braided and beaded trim.
