Sidonglobophobia (from the Latin word globī (globus) meaning "globe" or "sphere" and φόβος ( phóbos), meaning "fear") is a specific phobia that translates to an irrational fear of cotton balls. It can also be known in more general terms as bambakophobia (from the Greek word μπαμπάκι (bampáki) meaning "cotton"), a fear of any cotton. It is a type of sensory processing disorder, a term defined by Miller et al. to encompass multiple categories of sensory impairments. Over sensitivity to everyday stimuli can be in the form of tactile, oral, auditory, or gravitational defensiveness but in the case of Sidonglobophobia it is most commonly observed as a response to the touch or sound of cotton balls.
Individuals with this phobia tend to have extreme anxiety, increased heart rate, dizziness and other symptoms associated with panic attacks when seeing cotton balls. For some, the mental image of such is enough to trigger a spike in cortisol levels and a subsequent stress response. Most people with sidonglobophobia and other specific phobias can continue living unaltered lives however some may experience such intense repulsions that they avoid, at all cost, any experience that may bring them in contact with cotton balls. Though people may understand this fear of cotton or cotton balls is irrational and such inanimate objects will not be threatening to their wellbeing, many feel powerless to stop it.
Michael Jackson was said to have suffered from Sidonglobophobia.
