Sarfarosh (translation: Fervour) is a 1999 Indian action drama film produced, written and directed by John Matthew Matthan. It stars Aamir Khan, Sonali Bendre and Naseeruddin Shah in the lead roles. John started working on Sarfarosh in 1992. Seven years were spent on the research, pre-production and production till it finally released in 1999. The film dealt with an Indian police officer's fight to stop cross-border terrorism. The film was released at the time of the Kargil conflict when tensions between India and Pakistan were high. The film was critically praised and was commercially successful at the box office. The film was remade in Kannada as Sathyameva Jayathe with Devaraj and in Telugu as Astram (2006) with Vishnu Manchu and Anushka Shetty.
Sarfarosh is a 1985 Indian Bollywood Action film produced by Prasan Kapoor on Tirupati Pictures Enterprises banner, directed by Dasari Narayana Rao. Starring Jeetendra, Leena Chandavarkar and Sridevi in the lead roles and music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film is remake of Telugu Blockbuster Movie Sardar Papa Rayudu (1980), starring N.T.Rama Rao, Sridevi in pivotal roles.
Sarfarosh also called Brave Hearts was a 1930 silent film directed by A. R. Kardar. Made as action adventure film based on the RKO dramas, it was produced by Kardar's production company, "Playart Phototone". According to Hameeduddin Mahmood, the films had double titles up until the mid-1930s; the Hindi/ Urdu name for the home market (India), and the English name for the overseas market. Kardar gave up acting after having starred in Husn Ka Daku (1929) and cast Gul Hamid in the main role. He also gave Rafiqe Ghaznavi a break as an actor in the film. Ghaznavi went on to become a famous music director.
The cinematographer was K. V. Machve, and the actors were Gul Hamid, Ghulam Qadir, Miss Gulzar, Rafiqe Ghaznavi and Mumtaz.
