Samir

Samir (also spelled Sameer, , , , , ) is a male given name with many varying origins, and is neutral in regard to representation of various ethnic or religious communities in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, Europe and elsewhere.

Two examples, in Arabic and Sanskrit. The Arabic Samir means: jovial, loyal or charming companion, while the Hindi and Sankrit Samir or more commonly Sameer means: air, wind, and is a male given name of Sanskrit origin referring to the Vedic divine Hero Lord Hanuman, because of his affinity to the Wind.

"Samira" is the feminine spelling. The name is also neutral in regard to representation of various religious and ethnic communities in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Central Asia, Russia, Africa and elsewhere.

The male variant of the name seems especially popular with football players, actors, and musicians, perhaps because of the names connection to wind, and thus movement and sound.

Variant spellings of the name include, Bosnian and Turkish Semir.
