Sambalpur

Sambalpur (; ) is situated in the eastern state of Odisha in India, is the largest and oldest cities in Odisha. It is the headquarter of Northern Revenue Division & headquarter of Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL). It is situated about 300 kilometers west of state capital Bhubaneswar , 550 kilometers west of Kolkata in West Bengal & 278 kilometers east of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It is also situated on the bank of Mahanadi River.

In the year 1883, Sambalpur was established as a municipality. Later in 2013 Sambalpur got the Municipal Corporation status. Sambalpur Municipal Corporation includes Burla, Hirakud and neighbouring 12 Gram Panchayats.The total population of Sambalpur Metropolitan Area is 3,35,761.
