Safir (Arthurian legend)

Sir Safir is a Knight of the Round Table and the youngest son of the Saracen king Esclabor in the Arthurian legend. Both his brothers, Segwarides and Palamedes, also belong to the Round Table. He is a courageous and loyal knight and was, in his time, a fairly popular character, showing up in the Prose Tristan and Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. His name is included on the Winchester Round Table.

Safir appears in many works of Arthurian literature, usually alongside his brother Palamedes. In one incident, Safir is disguised as Sir Ector de Maris and fights with Sir Helior le Preuse. He defeats him and wins Sir Espinogres' lady. Vowing to defend the lady's honor, Sir Palamedes arrives on the scene, and locks sword with Safir, not realizing it is his brother. After fighting for an hour, both are impressed with each other's prowess and skill, and decide to ask the other's identity. Safir is devastated to find that he was fighting with his own brother and asks Palamedes for forgiveness. Together, they return the lady to Sir Espinogres.

Though he is a younger brother, Safir converted to Christianity some time before Palamedes. When the affair between Lancelot and Guinevere is exposed, Safir and Palamedes join Lancelot's side in the ensuing civil war between Lancelot and King Arthur. When they are banished to Lancelot's homeland in Gaul, Safir is made Duke of Landok while Palamedes becomes Duke of Provence.

SAFIR

SAFIR (or Single Aperture Far-InfraRed observatory) is a proposed space observatory for far-infrared light. The plan calls for single large mirror 5–10 meters in diameter, cooled to . This would feed detector arrays sensitive from 5 to 1000 µm. The possibility of servicing such a telescope in space has been evaluated. It is a large cryogenic space telescope.

SAFIR's primary mirror is expected to be 5–10 meters in diameter, quite large for a space-based telescope. For comparison, SAFIR's predecessor, the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer), launched in 2003, has a primary mirror only 0.85 meters in diameter. SAFIR is oriented towards longer wavelengths so the mirror does not have to be as accurate compared to visible and near-infrared telescopes like Hubble.

Safir (rocket)

The Safir (, meaning "ambassador") is the name of the first Iranian expendable launch vehicle that is able to place a satellite in orbit. The first successful orbital launch using the Safir launch system took place on 2 February 2009 when a Safir carrier rocket placed the Omid satellite into an orbit with a apogee.

Safir (singer)

Safir is a Danish female singer, musician, composer, writer and producer.

Safir is primarily known as a performing artist and from her debut album, Safirsongs. For a period of time she was also the drummer of Danish hip hop phenomenon White Chocolate.

Before Safir started performing as a musician, she worked as a DJ at the radio stations Radio Olga and Radio Næstved. Here she was hosting several popular weekly programs. Safir started playing drums at the age of 15 and began shortly after singing professionally in several constellations. This included e.g. her jazz quartet, big band, pop-bands etc.

In 2002 Safir took a PhD from the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen, Denmark, in voice. Safir has at times taught singing and music at different schools, including at the prestigious Danish boarding school Herlufsholm.

In 2008 Safir released the debut album Safirsongs on indie label Nefertiti Records in cooperation with Scandinavian distributor Gateway Music. Safir is now based in Los Angeles and performs, writes and records with different collaborators.

Safir (vehicle)

Safir (, meaning "ambassador") is an Iranian 4x4 multipurpose military vehicle built by Fath Vehicle Industries. This vehicle was officially unveiled in 2008. In the ceremony, Iranian defense minister said that 3,000 Safirs were built in that year, and Fath industries would deliver 5,000 more vehicles to defense industry per year.

Safir has a modular build and has many models. These include:

  • A version equipped with 12 Fajr 1 107 mm rocket tubes.
  • A version equipped with a 106 mm recoilless rifle for use against enemy armored vehicles
  • A model equipped with a Toophan anti tank missile launcher to counter enemy tanks
  • A model equipped with 9K11 Malyutka anti tank missiles (Probably Iranian produced Ra'ad)
  • A model equipped with Towsan anti tank missiles
  • A variant equipped with a Grenade launcher
  • Command vehicle
  • Ambulance
  • Radio wave emitter

Safir can greatly enhance Iran's ability to transport its units across the country and also improves the maneuverability of the Iranian forces across the battlefield. Also it acts as fast transporter of Fajr 1 rockets, 106 mm recoilless rifle and Toophan anti tank missile.
