The stores sell farm supplies and parts, livestock equipment, hunting and fishing equipment, small appliances, housewares, automotive goods, plumbing, electrical, apparel, hardware, lawn and garden supplies, paint, pet supplies, sporting goods, and tools. The company is based in Marshall, Minnesota and its stores are affiliates of Do It Best Hardware and Mid-States Distributing.

Runnings started as an Automotive Supply Store established in 1947, Proprietor Norman A. “Red” Running, located at 422 W. Main St., Marshall, Minnesota.

Runnings Supply Inc. was incorporated in the state of Minnesota in 1973. Currently Runnings operates 37 retail stores. Runnings has converted some old Kmart and big-box stores in Minnesota into fleet and farm stores. On April 7, 2015, the chain opened up a new store in Claremont, New Hampshire inside a former Lowe's building that closed in 2012.
