Externally roothairs are formed on the confluent petioles, either a little above, or on a level with, the plumule.

The petioles are clothed with roothairs like those on a true radicle, and they likewise resemble radicles in becoming brown when immersed in a solution of permanganate of potassium.

Even with seeds lying on the bare surface, the first developed roothairs, by becoming attached to stones or other objects on the surface, are able to hold down the upper part of the radicle, whilst the tip penetrates the ground.

The mechanical aid afforded by the roothairs in penetrating the ground is probably only a secondary service.

The attachment of the roothairs is effected by the liquefaction of the outer surface of the cellulose walls, and by the subsequent setting hard of the liquefied matter.
