Rhizomys
Rhizomys is a genus of rodents in the family Spalacidae. They are all stocky burrowers with short, naked tails. Rhizomys contains these species:
- Hoary bamboo rat (R. pruinosus)
- Chinese bamboo rat (R. sinensis)
- Large bamboo rat (R. sumatrensis)

Holmes had read of rhizomys sumatrensis, the great Sumatran bamboo rat, but this bizarre monstrosity bore little relationship to the descriptions.
