Red Line (MBTA)

The Red Line is a rapid transit line operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). It runs roughly northwest-to-southeast across Cambridge and Davis Square in Somerville – from Alewife in North Cambridge to Kendall/MIT in Kendall Square – with a connection to commuter rail at Porter. It then crosses over the Longfellow Bridge into downtown Boston, where it connects with the Green Line at Park Street, the Orange Line at Downtown Crossing, the Silver Line at South Station, as well as Amtrak and commuter rail at the South Station surface terminal before passing through South Boston and Dorchester. South of JFK/UMass in Dorchester, it splits into two branches terminating at Braintree and Ashmont stations; transfers to commuter rail are again possible at JFK/UMass, Quincy Center, and Braintree. From Ashmont, passengers may continue to Mattapan via the Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line, a light rail line.

All Red Line stations are handicapped accessible except Wollaston on the Braintree branch, and Valley Road on the Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line. , MBTA is designing renovations to make Wollaston fully accessible.

The Red Line, sometimes known as the Howard-Dan Ryan Line and the North-South Line, is a rapid transit line in Chicago, run by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) as part of the Chicago "L" system. It is the busiest line on the "L" system, with an average of 251,813 passengers boarding each weekday in 2012. The route is long with a total of 33 stations, from Howard station in Rogers Park on the north side, through the State Street subway and to 95th/Dan Ryan in Roseland on the south side. Like the Blue Line, the Red Line runs 24 hours a day/365 days a year, it is only one of six mass-transit rail systems in the United States to do so (the others being the PATCO Speedline, Staten Island Railway, the PATH lines, 1 line of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro and the New York City Subway). A proposed extension would extend the Red Line south from 95th to 130th Street.

The Red Line of the Washington Metro rail rapid transit system serves 27 stations in Montgomery County, Maryland and the District of Columbia, United States. It is a primary line through downtown Washington and the oldest and busiest line in the system. It forms a long, narrow "U", capped by its terminal stations at Shady Grove and Glenmont.

The line provides service at 6-minute intervals during the day and 12-minute intervals in the evening.

The Red Line is the only line in the system that does not share its tracks with another metrorail line.

The Red Line, also referred to the veterinary cordon fence (VCF) is a pest-exclusion fence separating northern Namibia from the central and southern country parts.
