Reactivity (chemistry)

Reactivity in chemistry refers to

  • the chemical reactions of a single substance,
  • the chemical reactions of two or more substances that interact with each other,
  • the systematic study of sets of reactions of these two kinds,
  • methodology that applies to the study of reactivity of chemicals of all kinds,
  • experimental methods that are used to observe these processes,
  • theories to predict and to account for these processes.

The chemical reactivity of a single substance (reactant) covers its behaviour in which it:

  • Decomposes
  • Forms new substances by addition of atoms from another reactant or reactants
  • Interacts with two or more other reactants to form two or more products

The chemical reactivity of a substance can refer to the variety of circumstances (conditions that include temperature, pressure, presence of catalysts) in which it reacts, in combination with the:

  • Variety of substances with which it reacts,
  • Equilibrium point of the reaction (i.e., the extent to which all of it reacts)
  • Rate of the reaction

The term reactivity is related to the concepts of chemical stability and chemical compatibility.

Reactivity

Reactivity may refer to:

  • Reactivity (chemistry), the rate at which a chemical substance tends to undergo a chemical reaction
  • Reactive programming, a property of an execution model whereby changes are automatically propagated through a dataflow network
Reactivity (psychology)

Reactivity is a phenomenon that occurs when individuals alter their performance or behavior due to the awareness that they are being observed. The change may be positive or negative, and depends on the situation. It is a significant threat to a research study's internal validity and is typically controlled for using blind experiment designs.

There are several forms of reactivity. The Hawthorne effect occurs when research study participants know they are being studied and alter their performance because of the attention they receive from the experimenters. The John Henry effect, a specific form of Hawthorne effect, occurs when the participants in the control group alter their behavior out of awareness that they are in the control group.

Reactivity is not limited to changes in behaviour in relation to being merely observed; it can also refer to situations where individuals alter their behavior to conform to the expectations of the observer. An experimenter effect occurs when the experimenters subtly communicate their expectations to the participants, who alter their behavior to conform to these expectations. The Pygmalion effect occurs when students alter their behavior to meet teacher expectations. Both experimenter effects and Pygmalion effects can be caused by bias and stereotyping, as demonstrated by studies involving stereotype threat.

Usage examples of "reactivity".

Overheating can be caused by lack of cooling in a loss of coolant accident or by excess reactivity addition as in a control rod jump.

Damien would say, is closer to allergy, a morbid and sometimes violent reactivity to the semiotics of the marketplace.

By the end of the decade powerful immunosuppressive drugs, such as 6-mercaptopurine, had been shown to be capable of holding in abeyance the reactivity of dogs to renal homografts, and soon afterward this principle was successfully extended to man.

Just as Nietzschean power tends to coagulate in reactivity, the Sartrean group tends to dissolve into seriality, which, like the morality of the slave, is defined by that which is outside of it.

You’re aware of the role of the prefrontals in terms of emotional reactivity.

It’s the choice to move from reactivity to proactivity, to take the initiative—whether you’ve offended someone or been offended yourself—to go and make reconciliation.
