Ramapo
Ramapo (occasionally spelled Ramapough) is the name of several places and institutions in northern New Jersey ( Bergen and Passaic Counties) and the adjoining area of Rockland County in southeastern New York State. They were named after the Ramapough, a band of the Lenape Indians who migrated into the area from Connecticut by the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
The Ramapough Mountain Indians, now called the Ramapough Lenape Indian Nation, are recognized by New Jersey as a Native American tribe and are descendants of the Lenape Munsee. They live in the area in the Ramapo Mountains.
