Raiffeisen

Raiffeisen \Raif"fei`sen\ (r[imac]f"[imac]`z'n), a. (Economics) Designating, or pertaining to, a form of co["o]perative bank founded among the German agrarian population by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (1818-88); as, Raiffeisen banks, the Raiffeisen system, etc. The banks are unlimited-liability institutions making small loans at a low rate of interest, for a designated purpose, to worthy members only.

Raiffeisen is a Swiss cooperative bank. After UBS and Credit Suisse, it is the third largest bank in Switzerland.

Raiffeisen has 3.7 million customers, 1.8 million of whom are cooperative members (co-owners) of Raiffeisen. The group has 1,084 branches throughout Switzerland and is a member of the International Raiffeisen Union (IRU), which is an association of cooperatives based on the ideas of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen.
