What is "quisqueya"

Quisqueya (or Kiskeya) is one of the names of Hispaniola believed to mean "mother of all lands" in the Taíno language. Although the consensus among scholars is that it was the invention of early historian Pedro Martir, which European writers later imitated. In the mid-19th century, Dominicans adopted the name for the Dominican Republic to differentiate themselves from Haiti. Nonetheless, it is used by both sides of the island. The name and its demonym "quisqueyano" may refer to:

Quisqueya is a genus of orchids, (family Orchidaceae), consisting of four species endemic to the island of Hispaniola of the Greater Antilles. The genus was established in 1979 by Donald Dungan Dod. Its name is derived from the Taino name for Hispaniola.
