What is "pygments"

Pygments is a syntax highlighting engine written in Python created by Georg Brandl and Armin Ronacher which supports over 300 programming, scripting, or markup languages and other text formats. Pygments is licensed under a BSD license.

It is used by many websites and applications including Wikipedia, Bitbucket and the Sphinx documentation generator.
