prosauropod

n. Any member of the ''Prosauropoda'', a group of early herbivorous dinosaurs with a long neck and small head, forelimbs shorter than the hindlimbs, and a very large thumb claw for defense.

Usage examples of "prosauropod".

The first period followed the separation of dinosaurs from their archosaur ancestors, which took place in the Late Triassic, when the earliest herrerasaurids and prosauropods dominated various other herbivorous and carnivorous vertebrates.

Additionally, there are aspects of the sauropod ankle which suggest to some workers that sauropods evolved independently of the prosauropods.

In general, with the discovery of new sauropod material from the Early Jurassic, many dinosaur workers concur that sauropods arose from prosauropod stock.

Dinosaurs were unrecorded from Antarctica until 1987, when an ankylosaur was reported by a scientific party from Argentina, and in the winter of 1991 a prosauropod discovery made it onto the front pages of our newspapers.
