Proletary \Prol"e*ta*ry\, n.; pl. Proletaries. [ L. proletarius, fr. proles offspring. Cf. Prol['e]taire.] (Rom. Antiq.) A citizen of the lowest class, who served the state, not with property, but only by having children; hence, a common person.
