Pontypridd is both a community and the county town of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, and is situated 12 miles/19 km north of the Welsh capital city of Cardiff. Pontypridd is often abbreviated to "Ponty" by local residents.
Pontypridd is a county constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It returns one Member of Parliament (MP), elected by the first past the post system. Pontypridd has been represented by a succession of Labour MPs since 1922. Since the 2010 general election the seat has been held by Owen Smith.
Pontypridd is a constituency of the National Assembly for Wales. It elects one Assembly Member by the first-past-the-post electoral system. It is also one of eight constituencies in the South Wales Central electoral region that elects four additional members (along with eight constituency members), to produce a degree of proportional representation for the region as a whole.
