c.1300, fantum "illusion, unreality," from Old French fantosme (12c.), from Vulgar Latin *fantauma, from Latin phantasma "an apparition" (see phantasm). The ph- was restored in English late 16c. (see ph). Meaning "specter, spirit, ghost" is attested from late 14c.; that of "something having the form, but not the substance, of a real thing" is from 1707. As an adjective from early 15c.

Phantom (1808 – after 1832) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from April 1811 to April 1813 he ran ten times and won seven races. In the summer of 1811 he proved himself one of the best British colts of his generation, winning the Epsom Derby on his second racecourse appearance. He continued to race with considerable success for two more years, mainly in match races. The photograph is a black and white derivative of Lik's previous color image titled Ghost, and was produced as a unique print. (Ghost was produced in an edition of 950 with an additional 45 artist's proofs.) Both images depict a ghost-like figure within a cavern at Antelope Canyon, Arizona.
