What is "ortygan"

Ortygan \Or"ty*gan\, n. [Gr. ?, ?, a quail.] (Zo["o]l.) One of several species of East Indian birds of the genera Ortygis and Hemipodius. They resemble quails, but lack the hind toe. See Turnix.
