The are considered a Japanese uninhabited atoll with a total area of . Its dry land area, however, is mostly made up by three concrete encasings; it furthermore has a platform in its lagoon housing a research station. China and Taiwan dispute the Japanese exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around the atoll, stating that the atoll is not an island and therefore cannot have an EEZ.

It is located on the Palau-Kyushu Ridge in the Philippine Sea at , southeast of Oki Daitō and west-southwest of Minami Iwo Jima of the Ogasawara Islands or south of Tokyo, Japan. The English meaning of the name is "remote bird islands"; they are the southernmost islands of Japan, and the only Japanese territory in the tropics.
