The NightRider was a network of bus services in Melbourne, Australia. It operated on weekends and for special events from the Melbourne City Centre to the outer suburbs on 13 routes, with over 300 stops between 01:30 (00:00 on the Doncaster route) and 04:30 on Saturdays and 05:30 on Sundays. NightRider ceased operation on 27 December 2015, being replaced by Night Network's Night Bus services which commenced operation in 2016.
Nightrider was the sixth studio album by The Charlie Daniels Band, released on November 25, 1975.
"Nightrider" is a song from Electric Light Orchestra's (ELO) album Face the Music.
The song's title is a titular tip of the hat to Lynne's first major band, The Nightriders. This was the third single released from the album after " Evil Woman", in 1976. The B-side on the single was a live version of "Daybreaker" taken from the 1974 live album The Night the Light Went On in Long Beach. Despite ELO's rising popularity, the song failed to chart. The song was also included as the B-side on the US hit single " Do Ya".
Between 3:16 and 3:19, the song features a string crescendo which was reused (played backwards, from 2:40 to 2:44) on another of the album's tracks, "Evil Woman".
"I took the high string part of Nightrider that climbs up to a climax, and used it backwards in Evil Woman as a big effect. I was amazed when it slotted in seamlessly." - Jeff Lynne (Face the Music remaster liner notes)
During live performances, Jeff Lynne and Kelly Groucutt would swap vocals during the song.
A nightrider (also known as a knightmare or unicorn, though the latter sometimes also means the bishop–nightrider compound) is a fairy chess piece that can move any number of steps as a knight in the same direction. Intervening squares must be vacant. For example, a nightrider on b2 can reach square c4 and forward to d6 and e8, but cannot jump over the f4-pawn to reach h5. The nightrider is usually represented by an inverted knight in diagrams, and symbol N in text (in which case the knight is abbreviated as S for German Springer).
The nightrider was invented by T. R. Dawson in 1925, and is mostly used in chess problems.
