What is "mucocele"

Mucocele \Mu"co*cele\, n. [Mucus + Gr. kh`lh tumor.] (Med.) An enlargement or protrusion of the mucous membrane of the lachrymal passages, or dropsy of the lachrymal sac, dependent upon catarrhal inflammation of the latter.

A mucocele is any dilatation (typically pathologic) with accumulation of mucus. Examples include:

• Oral mucocele
• Mucocele of the petrous apex
• Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses
• Mucocele of appendix
• Gallbladder mucocele
