What is "mubah"

Mubah ( Arabic: مباح) is an Islamic Arabic term denoting an action as neither forbidden nor recommended, and so religiously neutral. This is one of the degrees of approval ( ahkam) in Islamic jurisprudence.

The term is often used as a synonym for halal. However, some Ulama (Islamic clerics) draw a distinction between the two words. According to Mujam al mustalahaat, "Halaal is that for which no clear prohibition has been mentioned, whereas mubah is where a choice has been given."
