Melamaravakkadu

Melamaravakkadu is a village in Thiruvarur district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located between Mannargudi and Thirumakkottai main road at a distance of 4 km from the Mannargudi town. Melamaravakkadu is administered by a Asesham panchayath. As of 2011, the panchayath covered an area of 11.55 km2 (4.46 sq mi) and had a population of 3,796. Melamaravakkadu comes under the Mannargudi assembly constituency which elects a member to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly once every five years and it is a part of the Thanjavur constituency which elects its Member of Parliament (MP) once in five years. The word Maravakkadu is derived from the Tamil word "Marakkamudiyatha kaadu" which means "Unforgettable forest" in early days in this village might be filled with forest, then the word Mela refer the "West direction" which mean our village located west side of the Paamani river. The village is locally referred as "Maravai". It has an average elevation of 6 m (20 ft). Melamaravakkadu is situated on the banks of Pamaniyar River, a tributary of the Vettar and is covered with fertile soil conducive for rice cultivation. The topography is completely flat and the town is a part of the fertile Cauvery Delta. Melamaravakkadu is situated at a distance of 304 km (191 mi) from the state capital Chennai and 28 km (17 mi) from Tiruvarur, the district headquarters. Agriculture is the principal occupation of the people of Melamaravakkadu and the crops cultivated include paddy, sugarcane, seasame, groundnut and pulses like urad and mung bean. The agriculture around the village mainly depends on the river Pamaniyar, while the other sources of irrigation are bore-wells. Melamaravakkadu has three prominent Hindu temples, namely, Sri Vinayagar temple, Sri Mangala mariyamman temple and Sri Veeramanavaala swamy temple. During the Tamil months of Vaikashi (May–June), the most prominent festival of the Sri Mangalamariyamman temple, namely, Vaikaasi Thiruvizha, is celebrated five days. There are two schools in our village one is tamilnadu government public panchyat elementary school which is inaugurated in 1965. Another one is Devi Higher secondary school which runs since last 10 year by privately.

According to 2011 census, Melamaravakkadu had a population of 865 with a sex-ratio of 423 females for every 442 males, much above the national average of 92.9. As per literate census above 90 percentage of people are literate which is higher than average value of our nation. As of 2012, a total 1.14 km2 (281 acres) (24.38%) of the land was used for residential, 0.72 km2 (177.03 acres) (63%) for agriculture.
