Matej ( Bulgarian Cyrillic: Матей) is a given name that originates from Hebrew Mattithyahu, used in countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It is one of the most common male names in Slovakia, Poland and Slovenia. It is also common in Croatia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and less common in the Czech Republic. The Czechs use Matěj, with a soft t. In Ukraine it's Matvij, in Russia Matviey, and in Poland it's Maciej. (The Poles also use its diminutive version: Maciek, pronounced .)
