Mastertrader is one of the earliest online brokerage firms, founded at the height of the dot.com bubble era. It was one of the first firms to allow investors to directly buy stocks through their computers, thereby by-passing the traditional broker. The firm's founder Greg Capra is a pioneer in the field of day trading and co-authored the seminal book "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader".
On January 6, 2014, Mastertrader.com closed the White Plains office. Greg Capra is now licensed at Lightspeed Trading where long-term clients have followed. Lightspeed Trading is now the preferred broker of Greg Capra and Pristine.com. Many Pristine students open their trading accounts at Lightspeed under Greg Capra’s registered representative license for the advantages he provides through Pristine.com as well as the excellent service and trading platforms provided.
The firm was one of two divisions of a parent company called Pristine Capital Holdings. The second division, Pristine.com, is a trading education company.
The main business of Mastertrader was to provide trading platforms and support services to active traders and investors. Trades were entered by clients through one of the firm's trading platforms, which provided direct access to markets such as the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and Bats Exchange, Inc; as well as to over eighteen order routes and ECN's ( Electronic communication network), such as NYSE Arca.
The main trading platform it offered was the RealTick platform created by Townsend Analytics. It also offered the eSignal trading platform owned by Interactive Data Corporation, as well as two others.
The firm was formerly known as the Executioner before changing its name to Mastertrader.com in 2001.
In 2012, Mastertrader began operating as a branch office of Stock USA Execution Services, Inc.
The firm's main competition are the larger online brokerage firms, such as E-Trade and TD Ameritrade.
