What is "malonsici"

Malonšići was a tribe in Old Montenegro (historical Zeta). The tribe encompassed parts of what was later Zagarač, Komani and Bjelopavlići. The tribe was mentioned in 1455, Đurađ Crnojević's 1492 charter, and Ottoman defters from 1521, 1523, 1570 and 1582/83. As Ottoman subjects, they paid 180 akçe for their meadows in 1521, and 450 akçe in 1523. In the 1523 defter Malonšići was one of seven nahia (territorial unit) of the Sanjak of Montenegro. In the 1570 defter of the Montenegro Vilayet they are mentioned as a nahia having 175 houses, 12 baština, and 5,610 akçe tax. The tribe originated from an Illyrian or Albanian katun (winter pasture), Melenza (Malenza is Albanian for "black hill", thus, Malonšići means "black highlanders" or "black mountaineers", according to P. Šobajić), which received Serbs and had by the 15th century completely Serbicized. They were under the influence of the tribes of Brda, but also under danger from their permeation. They disappeared in the late 16th century. The Bjelopavlići settled in a part of their territory.
