Lygeum Spartum

Sparterie \Spar"ter*ie\, n. [F., from Sp. esparto esparto, L. spartum, Gr. ?.] Articles made of the blades or fiber of the Lygeum Spartum and Stipa tenacissima (syn. Macrochloa tenacissima), kinds of grass used in Spain and other countries for making ropes, mats, baskets, nets, and mattresses.

Matweed \Mat"weed`\, n. (Bot.) A name of several maritime grasses, as the sea sand-reed ( Ammophila arundinacea) which is used in Holland to bind the sand of the seacoast dikes (see Beach grass, under Beach); also, the Lygeum Spartum, a Mediterranean grass of similar habit.
